Dear Friends,

This is a resource page for students in the April, 2024 Chrysalis Course: “Why Should I Care About Novalis?” The course begins on April 9 and occurs for four Tuesdays.

In this course I intend to focus primarily on Rudolf Steiner’s reading of Novalis. This includes the importance of Novalis to the development of spiritual science and his importance in the School of Michael.

It is hard to overstate the importance of “Novalis” for Rudolf Steiner. As Rudolf Steiner emphasized directly and indirectly many times, Novalis is the “Herald of Anthroposophy.” Many persons have gone so far as to say that Novalis is the “key” to Anthroposophy. In his Last Address on the eve of Michaelmas in 1924 (the concluding lecture of his Karmic Relationships series), Rudolf Steiner pointed to the importance of Novalis for our 21st century. One hundred years after the Last Address and twenty-five years into our 21st century . . . is it time to take Rudolf Steiner’s admonition seriously?  How can we find Novalis for our time?

In this course I will unpack and explain why Rudolf Steiner and Marie Steiner placed so much emphasis on Novalis.

Because we will be discussing Rudolf Steiner’s reading of Novalis, I won’t have much time to discuss the biography of the literary Novalis, the poet Friedrich von Hardenberg (1772 – 1801), born in Saxony, who adopted the pen name Novalis when he began to publish as poet. But, I already have made much information available about the poet Novalis and his views of our human reality.

On this page, I have assembled those materials for easy access and self-paced study. We can discuss all this in the course, of course, but my intention for the Chrysalis Offering is to focus on Novalis in respect to Rudolf Steiner and Anthroposophy, primarily. This is in itself an entire continent for extended exploration.

“A hall in a prevailing tone of indigo blue. The ante-chamber to the rooms in which a Mystic League carries on its work. In the centre a large door with curtain. Above it is the Rosy Cross. On each side of the door two pictures which represent, beginning from the right of the stage, the Prophet Elijah, John the Baptist, Raphael, the poet Novalis. There are present, in lively conversation twelve Persons, who in one way or another take an interest in the activities of the League.” 

Grand Master Hilary True-to-God speaks:

 

“In that spirit’s name who has revealed himself
to many souls within this holy place,
we now appear before these persons who,
till now, were not allowed to hear the words
that here resound mysteriously.
The powers who guide our progress on the earth
could not, in the remotest days of yore,
reveal themselves in light to everyone.
For it was as with children; gradually
the forces had to be matured and strengthened
that were designed to carry on our knowing.
So was it that mankind in general
had slowly to unfold in course of time.
In darkness lived at first those impulses
that later came to show themselves as worthy
to see the spirit-light from higher worlds.
In those remotest days when earth began,
great spirits were sent down from higher worlds
to be the wise and watchful guides of men.
They cultivated in the sanctuaries
those spirit-forces that could penetrate
mysteriously into the souls, who had
no conscious knowledge of their leaders.
And later the wise masters found that they
